How to be an Asset at work! (Part 1)

If you just started working there or you are going after that new open position, here are some sure fire ways to get noticed. You want to be an asset to your company, not just an employee.

  • Always have a positive outlook

Maybe seem simple, but it's highly misunderstood. Don't just be happy pappy with your boss then complain to your coworkers. You want to find a positive aspect in every project, in every part of your day, and especially in everyone you work with. Yes, even the odd temp that hums too loud out of tune.

  • Know your strengths and weaknesses

You may know them already, but make sure you're being truthful with yourself. If you have a strength in one area, exercise it! Just like your muscles, if you don't work it regularly and try to push it more sometimes, you'll become complacent. Also, you want to try to improve a weakness. Maybe you just can't stay organized, no problem. Spend 5 minutes in the beginning and end of each work day improving on that.

  • Always be understanding

This means with everyone and each situation, no exceptions. A great way to understand it is to look at it from another persons point of view. If you are having a hard time seeing a coworkers point of view on the subject it's most likely because you don't now them that well. So, get to know them. Try coffee just before work, lunch together, or maybe drinks after. It's important to see things from many angles, you'll gain insight on the situation that you never knew you should know.

  • Keep a powerful circle

You'll find this fun to do! Think of the four people you spend the most time with (besides you life partners and family). Think of their jobs, think about how much money they earn. I'll bet you $20 that all five of you make about the same amount. Try that with someone else today if you don't believe me. We become who we are around the most. It's a silly thing that you think stops in high school, but it doesn't. So how do you fix this? Add to your circle! Invite a mentor or executive out to disc golf. Try a weekend barbeque with your boss and his staff. Do something creative and fun that gets everyone in a relaxed environment. From there you can learn all about their success, how they got their, and apply it to yourself.

  • Look & Act like the person you want to be

Alright, I know you've heard the cliche "dress for the position you want", but it's true! If you want to be a big business mogul that only wears blue suits and drives an Audi, then go ahead and start doing it! Dress like you want to and treat your now car like you would your dream car. You'll be amazed the change that comes with it. Now, don't misunderstand me completely. You should always retain the personality of yourself, never loose your values or morals. However, by making a simple change in attitude, appearance, and the way you carry yourself, you'll be on the road to that dream coming true!

Look for the next five (Part 2) in the coming weeks!
